Each E.C Tablet Contains: Mesalazine 250 & 500
This medicine may reduce prostaglandins production by inhibiting the cyclo-oxygenase enzymes and as a result reduces inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease.
Mesalazine is used in the treatment and prevention of mild to moderate cases of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.
Although the use of Mesalazine has not been shown to harm the baby or fetus in current studies, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, be sure to tell your doctor about taking the medication.
General characteristics of interactions:
Sensitive to gastric pH (check for interactions with medications that change gastric pH).
Aggravation of bone marrow suppression effects, irritation of renal toxicity
Category X interactions to avoid:

Reducing the effects of medicines by Mesalazine:
Cardiac glycosides
Reduction of the effects of Mesalazine by medicines: antacids, histamine H₂ receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors
Increasing the effects of medicines by Mesalazine:
Heparin, heparins (low molecular weight), bone marrow suppressants, thiopurine analogs, vaccines containing chicken pox virus.
Increasing the effects of Mesalazine by medicines:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Interference with food:
Has not been stated.
This medicine has to be used with caution in the presence of hematologic disorders and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
Mesalazine should not be taken in case of hypersensitivity to salicylates and kidney failure.
Common complications >10%
Central nervous system: headache
Gastrointestinal: abdominal cramp , abdominal pain, constipation
Respiratory: nasopharyngitis
Relatively common side effects (1-10%):
Cardiovascular: hypertension
Central nervous system: dizziness, fatigue, pain, anger, paresthesia
Skin: skin rash, ringworm, vulgaris acne
Endocrine and metabolism: increased serum triglycerides, weight loss
Gastrointestinal: diarrhea, worsening of ulcerative colitis, bloating, upper abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, lower abdominal pain, gastroenteritis, hemorrhoids, inability to completely evacuate, gastrointestinal bleeding, dysentery, pancreatitis, sclerosing cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct), vomiting, rectal pain, abdominal bloating, anal and rectal pain, nausea and vomiting, colitis
Genitourinary: hematuria, urinary frequency
Hematology and oncology: decrease in hematocrit, decrease in hemoglobin, hematochezia
Hepatic: cholestatic hepatitis, elevated serum levels of transaminase enzymes, liver failure
Infectious: flu, infection, viral infection
Neurological, muscular and skeletal: back pain, joint pain, arthropathy, leg pain
Ocular: vision disorders
Auditory: Tinnitus
Renal: decreased creatinine clearance
Respiratory: rhinitis, sinusitis, cough, dyspnea
Miscellaneous: intolerance syndrome, fever
The dosage taken at each time may vary according to the brand of medicine that is prescribed for you. Therefore, be sure to prepare and take the medicine according to your doctor’s order, and if you need to change the brand of the medicine for any reason, be sure to inform the doctor.
Some tablets or granules of Mesalazine (especially coated types) pass completely through the stomach before being absorbed. These medications must be swallowed whole. Thus, do not crush or chew or dissolve them and be sure to carefully read the recommendations on the packaging or brochure of the medicine.
Avoid simultaneous use of anti-indigestion medicines with Mesalazine and take Mesalazine at least two hours before or after the time of taking these medications since indigestion drugs can destroy the coating, especially the drug granules.
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless you have already reached your next dose. In this case, do not take the missed dose and take the next dose as usual.
This medicine should be taken before meals with enough water.
Store at a temperature below 30 degrees Celsius, in the original packaging, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
